"Anonymous Pedestrian" monument in Wrocław

56 Piłsudskiego Street, Wrocław, 50-033

Information

Pomnik Anonimowego Przechodnia (Monument to Anonymous Pedestrian) is located on both sides of Świdnicka Street at the intersection with Piłsudskiego Street. The monument consists of fourteen natural-size bronze figures. Visitors will see a mother with a child and an old woman with a cane, a woman with groceries, a man with a suitcase and ten other ordinary passersby. Some of the sculptures are visible in their entirety, while others go into the invisible underground. The closer the Anonymous people get to the edge of the road, the deeper they sink into the paving slabs. The monument was unveiled on the night of December 12-13, 2005, on the 24th anniversary of the introduction of martial law. It symbolizes the changes that have taken place in Poland since then. According to another interpretation, the monument commemorates the difficult times of martial law and the achievements of anonymous people who fought against communism by going underground.
