Information

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Pelplin (Polish:Bazylika katedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Pelplinie) is the most valuable monument in the city, one of the most beautiful and greatest works of brick Gothic in Poland. Inside, there is a beautiful Main Altar with the relics of the Saints - the largest in this part of Europe, baroque side altars and medieval oak sculptures. The church is a three-nave, eleven-span basilica, cut in half by a two-nave hall transept. There are several dozen altars in the temple, of which the largest and most magnificent is the Main Altar with a reliquary containing relics, among others. St. Paul, Maurice, Jerzy, Barbara, Błażej and 40 martyrs. This reliquary is opened once a year on the Feast of All Saints, that is on November 1. The altars have preserved valuable paintings by the main representatives of the Gdańsk and Pomeranian Baroque. At the pillar in the corner of the nave and the transept (on the south side) there is a baroque pulpit, the base of which depicts Samson tearing a lion's mouth. Further, on the organ gallery in the southern arm of the transept, there is a monumental organ prospectus from 1678-70. The instrument is the work of the Gdańsk organ builder Jan Jerzy Wulff.
