Information

The Chełm Chalk Tunnels (Polish: Podziemia Kredowe w Chełmie) is a world-unique labyrinth of underground corridors carved in the Cretaceous, stretching several dozen kilometers on five levels under the Chełm old town. The underground was built over several hundred years. The chalk mined under town houses was used as a building material in the old days. After the adaptation of selected parts of the corridors to tourist needs in the 1970s, the underground was made available to visitors. The current tourist route runs through three underground complexes of corridors in the area of the Church of the Sending of the Holy Apostles, under the Old Town Square and under Przechodnia Street. While exploring the route, visitors will get acquainted with numerous geological, archaeological and historical exhibitions. One of the special attractions is the shaft of the Old Town well, used from the 15th to the 18th century. The underground temperature is constant all year round, amounting to + 9 degrees Celsius, and humidity of 70-80%. The entrance to the underground is located on the slope below the Church of the Sending of Holy Apostles at 55a Lubelska Street.
