Information

The bronze sculpture by Igor Mitoraj shows a male head, without eyes, with a bandaged face, lying on the pavement. The title of the sculpture is - "Eros bound", or Eros bentato (Polish: Rzeźba Eros Bendato). The sculpture is standing in the Main Square near the Town Hall Tower. It weighs 1,900 kilograms, is 370 cm long, 290 cm wide and 225 cm high. Its market value is estimated at half a million euro. The sculpture was brought to Krakow in October 2005. It was a gift from Igor Mitoraj, Polish artist and sculptor. The head standing on the Market Square in Krakow is not unique as the sculpture was made in three copies. Initially, one went to Lugano, the second to Krakow, and the third was left in the hands of the artist who died in 2014. Igor Mitoraj, fascinated with ancient and Renaissance sculpture, transformed the motif of the human body in his works. Incomplete figures, fragments of bodies and heads resemble sculptures excavated by archaeologists. Thus, referring to ancient traditions, they develop a story about passing, leaving, fragility and, at the same time, duration, survival and preservation.
