Information

The Castle in Koło is an example of a Gothic defensive structure. It was probably built by King Casimir the Great before 1362, after the village of Koło was granted town privileges. It was then that the oldest element of the castle was built - the tower-keep. The castle protected the road leading from Greater Poland to Łęczyca through the Warta valley. It was built on an artificial hill in the Warta bend. For centuries, the castle was visited by Polish kings, there were also meetings of the nobility of Greater Poland. From the middle of the 16th century, it lost its importance and began to decline. Today the castle is a ruin, visitors can only see fragments of the former outer walls, foundations of the gatehouse and the lower part of the second tower. The castle is mainly a destination for excursions by the inhabitants of Koło and the surrounding area, because of its outstanding silence and interesting landscapes. In September 2020, the mayor of the Circle, Krzysztof Witkowski, announced that in the coming years it was planned to create a "large recreation center" around the castle - there is to be, among others, beach and gastronomic base.
