Information

Mariacka Street is one of the most stunning streets in Gdańsk. It perfectly reflects the unique atmosphere and character of the old buildings of Gdańsk. Mariacka Street was probably established in the 14th century. It was called "Our Lady Street" or "Frauengasse", and all of these names (together with Mariacka Street) referred to St. Mary's Basilica - the largest brick church in Europe, which crowns the entire 185-meter street. On the other side, the street ends with the Gothic St. Mary's Gate leading to the Motława River. Right next to St. Mary's Gate, there is the Archaeological Museum with a viewing tower. In addition to museums and the observation tower, on Mariacka Street visitors will also find charming restaurants, cafes, but most of all picture galleries, jewelers offering, among others, amber jewelery, or "the Swetra Gallery", which offers clothing made by designers. In summer, and especially during the St. Dominic's fair, there is a lot of traffic and buzz here: thousands of tourists, improvised bands playing the songs of old masters, cartoonists, street vendors. At other times of the year, you may not meet a single passerby here.
