Information

The Sandomierz Royal Castle (Polish: Zamek Królewski w Sandomierzu) was built on a slope of Vistula River in Sandomierz by Casmir III the Great and extended in the 16th century. Since 1986, the Regional Museum in Sandomierz has been located in the restored rooms of the castle. In total, in two locations - the second one is the town hall - it collects 11,000 exhibits from the Stone Age, known as the Palaeolithic through the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, to the early Middle Ages. The entire exhibition was divided thematically and available to visitors as part of the thematically related sections: archeology, ethnography, history, literature and art. One of the most important and interesting exhibits of the Regional Museum in Sandomierz is Sandomierz Chess, a unique, thirteenth-century set of chess pieces found in 1962 in the Świętojakubski Hill in Sandomierz. In addition to displaying monuments at permanent exhibitions and presenting attractive, temporary exhibitions, the museum conducts extensive educational activities: it organizes museum lessons, lectures, workshops, educational programs and competitions.
