Information

The Archcathedral Basilica of Saint James is located in the center of Szczecin. It is one of the most valuable and beautiful monuments of Szczecin, the second tallest church in Poland after the Licheń basilica. The basilica is 80 meters long and 40 meters wide. The cathedral has 5 naves covered with a single hall roof covered with copper. The main nave is 23 meters high. The cathedral boasts a rich and beautiful interior . Inside, there are historic and contemporary works of sacred art. Outside the church there is a bell called the Great one, made in 1682 by the Szczecin bell-founder Wawrzyniec Köckeritz, funded, among others, by the Swedish king Charles XI. The ceremonial consecration of the cathedral in Szczecin took place on May 31, 1982 at the hands of Kazimierz Majdański, Bishop of Szczecin and Kamień. Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of Cathedral Basilica on May 23, 1983, and in March 9 years later he gave it the title of Archcathedral Basilica.
