„The Former Babin Mine” Geotourism Path

Information

The geological trail (Polish: Ścieżka Geoturystyczna „Dawna Kopalnia Babina”) is located in the area of the former underground and opencast lignite and ceramic clay mining, which was carried out here on an industrial scale in 1920-1973. It is located in the vicinity of the town of Łęknica, in the southern part of the moraine geological structure known as the Muskau Bend. Following the route of the path, about 5 kilometers long, allows visitors to get to know, in a safe and convenient way, elements of the post-mining landscape, which is extremely rare in Poland, which was created as a result of multi-stage changes. Above the underground workings there are numerous water reservoirs, which in the Muskau region form a specific anthropogenic lake district. The path is marked with information boards describing individual geological sites and objects related to mining. There are benches waiting for tourists where they can rest and eat. Visitors have at their disposal a 30-meter observation tower, from which, on two observation decks, they can admire the beautiful post-mining landscape just above the largest post-mining reservoir "Africa" - the former excavation "Łuska C".
