Information

The castle in Rzeszów (Polish: Zamek Lubomirskich w Rzeszowie) was built in the second half of the 16th century, after the wedding of Mikołaj Spytko Ligęza with Zofia Rzeszowska. It was a two-story building with two corner towers, surrounded by a defensive wall. After Mikołaj's death and several years of inheritance disputes, the building finally fell into the hands of the Lubomirski family, who owned it until 1820. In 1820, the castle was sold to the Austrian authorities, which allocated it to the seat of a prison and a court. The prison was closed in 1981, and the entire building was handed over to the Ministry of Justice - it is the seat of the District Court. After 1989, cultural meetings, such as theater performances, were organized several times at the Castle. In 2014, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Polish Underground State and the 70th anniversary of the attempt to recapture the soldiers of the Polish independence underground imprisoned in the Castle, the Memorial Chamber was opened. In the room where the Memorial Room is located, there is a permanent exhibition presenting the history of the prison and the profiles of selected prisoners.
