Information

The Underground Tourist Route in Sandomierz (Polish: Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna w Sandomierzu) is the part of the underground system of multi-storey chambers and tunnels that is accessible to tourists. Formerly, they served as warehouses for goods such as herring, salt and wine. It was also a refuge for the population during the war - they made it easier to escape outside the city or provided a temporary hiding place. The current underground route was created from the combination of former cellars and underground merchants' depots. The route runs under eight tenement houses. The deepest excavations reach twelve meters below the Market Square and the pavements are 470 meters long. Each of the cellars / chambers has its own name, which is a reference to the history of Sandomierz. The undergrounds in Sandomierz are associated with many mysteries and legends. The most famous of them tells about the Sandomierz heroine, Halina Krępianka, who saved the city from the besieging Tatars at the cost of her own life. The entrance to the Underground Tourist Route is located in the courtyard of Kamienica Oleśnicki (10 Rynek Street). Sightseeing takes place in groups, only with a guide.
