Information

The Municipal Zoological Garden in Warsaw was founded on 11 March1928. It is located in the very heart of the capital and covers an area of 40 hectares. The collection of the Warsaw Zoo encompasses more than 3,500 animals, not counting nearly 10,000 fish and countless invertebrates, representing over 500 species, including about 40 endangered species covered by the EEP (programme carried out by zoological gardens across Europe). The Warsaw Zoo is open to visitors on every day of the year, always from 9:00 a.m.
In Warsaw Zoo there is also "Żabiński Villa". The villa was built as staff accommodation in 1931. It was inhabited by Jan Żabiński, who at the time served as director of the Warsaw Zoo, together with his family. Here several hundred people found a chance to live in humanit’’s most cruel time. In a time when death was the immediate penalty for giving a Jew a glass of water, two people, regardless of the consequences, decided to give shelter to those who were persecuted for belonging to a particular nationality. The Żabiński Villa can only be visited with a guide. The maximum number of people who can enter the Villa at one time is 25. The tour also includes a tour of the cellars where the Jews were hidden.
