7 Pawła Włodkowica Street, Wrocław, 50-072
A 19th century synagogue in the heart of Wrocław and a main cultural and religious centre of the local Jewish communities. The White Stork Synagogue (Pol. Synagoga Pod Białym Bocianem) was built in 1829 but the concept dates back to 1790 and Count Karl Georg Heinrich von Hoym who proposed building one major prayer hall instead of a number of existing smaller synagogues.
The synagogue was demolished during World War II and the subsequent years saw many change of owners and further devastation of the building. This lasted until mid-90’s when the Polish Ministry of Culture bought the building back and returned it to the Jewish community in Wrocław and the restoration work began. In 2005 a Jewish Culture and Education Centre was set up in the Synagogue by the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland.
The Synagogue is a major cultural centre in Wrocław and part of the district of four temples.
