Zakopane is one of the most popular tourist destinations. It is one of the most recognizable cities in Poland, often called the capital of the Polish mountains. The town is situated at an altitude of 750-1126 m above sea level, which makes it the highest situated city in Poland. The main road which leads to it is called ‘Zakopianka’. Apart from the possibility to practice winter sports and traversing picturesque walking trails of Tatra mountains, Zakopane delights tourists with a unique cultural character and mountain architecture. The Tatra Mountains, at the foot of which the city is situated, offer unforgettable views and experiences. The wonderfully preserved monuments of Zakopane, old wooden buildings and numerous galleries and museums will satisfy visitors who are eager to culture and history.Zakopane is also known for ski jumping, which has been liked for many years. Every year, popular competitions are held here, attracting fans from all over the world. In summer, mountain excursions, walks in the countryside and bike rides reign. It is also a place where you can taste old Polish cuisine and try traditional sheep cheese called ‘oscypek’.

About Zakopane

Zakopane is located in the Lesser Poland Province, it belongs to the Tatra County. It is situated at an altitude of 750-1126 m above sea level, which makes it the highest situated city in Poland. From the south it is surrounded by lofty Tatra peaks and from the north by the Gubałówka range. The city lies on several streams that eventually flow into the tributary of Biały Dunajec - the Zakopianka River. The Tatra National Park is located within the administrative boundaries of the city.

Currently, Zakopane is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Hundreds of thousands, and even millions of tourists come here every year. Thanks to its interesting history, original culture and wonderful nature, the city is an ideal place for relaxation for everyone. Numerous attractions await visitors both in winter and summer. Attractions

Attractions in Zakopane are extremely popular places, visited by a huge number of tourists, which create a unique and exceptional atmosphere of this place. One of the biggest attractions in Zakopane and its surroundings is definitely Morskie Oko. This largest lake in the Tatra Mountains is located in the Rybi Potok Valley, about 25 km from Zakopane. This place owes its popularity to the amazing views of the High Tatras and Rysy peak. There is also a mountain shelter by Morskie Oko.

A place that is crowded with tourists, enjoys their great popularity and certainly fits into the main attractions in Zakopane, is Krupówki. It is the most recognizable street in Poland, the symbol of the city - the main promenade of Zakopane. The Krupówki Street is 1100 m long and lies along the Foluszowy Stream. Its origins date back to the 19th century, when it connected Kościeliska Street with Kuźnice. There are also the oldest Zakopane hotels and numerous pubs and restaurants.

One of the most recognizable places in Zakopane is Gubałówka. Next to Giewont and Kasprowy Wierch, it is the most popular peak towering over the city. It rises to a height of 1 126 m above sea level. You can get to the top by a funicular railway. Already on the way you can enjoy great views, but the best ones show up when you arrive. From the top of the mountain, you can see the panorama of Zakopane and the Polish Tatra Mountains, as well as the Pieniny, Podhale and Beskid Żywiecki mountains. Nearby is Butorowy Wierch, from which you can go down to Kościelisko by a chairlift. Attractions located on the very Gubałówka are: Gubałówka ski resort with slopes, snow park and snowboard gutter, the iron cross of prof. Tytus Chałubiński, ski T-bar lifts (available in winter), or a gravity slide.

A trip to Kasprowy Wierch is a must-see during your stay in Zakopane. The peak of Kasprowy is easily accessible by cable car from Kuźnice. It runs throughout the year. The trip by cable car to the top takes about 20 minutes and provides unforgettable views. There are views of the mountain peaks in the Tatra Mountains and the most characteristic one - Giewont. Kasprowy also offers an opportunity to admire the Slovak part of the mountains, and even descend into the Ticha Valley (Cicha Liptowska). Many tourist hiking trails intersect here, leading to valleys or surrounding peaks. At the top you can have an enjoyable meal in a restaurant and visit the local meteorological observatory.

An important sightseeing point is the Wielka Krokiew ski jump, which is one of the extremely interesting places in Zakopane. This is a must see point, especially for jumping fans. This object can be seen not only from the bottom, but also from the perspective of the jumpers as you go up and down the cable car.

Zakopane is an excellent starting point for hiking tours in the mountains. The city is directly bordered by the Tatra National Park, with many perfectly prepared trails. Their diversity is a good proposition for everyone. Most routes are suitable for one-day trips and can be adapted to your preferences and physical condition. Short walks in the valley are suitable for people of all ages, from the youngest to the seniors. For beginners, the valley trails are worth crossing, the crossing of which is not a problem. The so-called Zakopane valleys, for example the Strążyska or Biała Valley. For more experienced hikers, the trails leading higher up to the peaks and passes will be attractive.

Interesting places in Zakopane are also monuments, mainly related to the highlander tradition, manifested in the form of buildings, costumes and other products of culture. The Tatra Museum provides a meeting with local folk culture and art, or the history of Zakopane. You can also learn more about the geology, animals and vegetation of the Tatra Mountains there.
