Archaeological reserve Zawodzie in Kalisz

Information

The Archaeological Reserve in Kalisz-Zawodzie is located in the oldest part of Kalisz, in the area of the early medieval city of Kalisz, in close proximity to the modern city center. This is one of the most important places related to the beginnings of the Polish state. It was built in the 1660s on a sandy island surrounded by the waters of Prosna. According to some researchers, it was from Kalisz that the Piast dynasty began its military conquest of castles located in the area of today's Greater Poland. Thanks to the reconstructions of medieval buildings and devices, visitors can experience the history of this place personally. As part of the experimental archeology activities in the Reserve, farm animals such as heather sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and bees are reared. Visitors also have the opportunity to learn about the medieval method of farming - three-field farming. The area of the hillfort is now the Archaeological Reserve of the District Museum of the Kalisz Region. The reserve hosts archaeological workshops, live history lessons, historical reconstructions, "Piast feasts" and other outdoor events, during which Piast rulers, knights and their ladies, warriors and craftsmen, and even a boat of St. Wojciech, whose stay in Kalisz is traditionally associated with the wooden church of St. Wojciech.
