Information

Church of Of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Turek is one of the unique temples of Greater Poland. It was built in the years 1904-1913 according to the design of Konstanty and Jarosław Wojciechowski, architects from Warsaw. The temple was consecrated in 1924. In the years 1932-1939, work was carried out inside the church. At that time, frescoes, stained glass designs and furnishings were made. The author of the whole concept was Józef Mehoffer (1869-1946), a well-known Krakow artist from Young Poland, a student of Jan Matejko. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an oriented, three-nave basilica with a transept. On the sides of the three-sided chancel, there are two chapels. Behind the presbytery, on the axis of the church, there is a pentagonal sacristy with auxiliary rooms above it. It was built of brick on a granite foundation and could accommodate 5,000 people at one time. In its central part there is a sculpture of Christ with Saints Peter and Paul on the sides. In 1938, the altar was changed and gilded according to the design of J. Mehoffer. On the side walls of the presbytery there are 4 scenes with evangelical themes. With these images, Mehoffer referred to the style of Roman catacomb painting. In the presbytery, there are also 4 stained glass windows with a Marian theme. In the lower parts of the walls, the dominant theme is the "eternal knot" - a symbol of God's infinity. On the net vault of the presbytery, the sky is depicted with the figures of 48 angels.
