Information

The Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła is a monastery and church complex that includes the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Wenceslas, Church of the Nativity and St. Bartholomew the Apostle and the Cistercian Monastery. They are located in the eastern part of Krakow in the Nowa Huta district, and are cared for by the Roman Catholic parish of st. Bartholomew the Apostle. Apart from the baroque facade of the church, added in the 18th century, the buildings date back to the transition period between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, hence their exceptional value. The temple is characterized by the features typical of Cistercian architecture throughout Europe: a short chancel closed with a straight wall, adjoining two pairs of side chapels, once used by monks for night prayers, prescribed by a strict monastic rule. In the 16th century, the chapels on the north side were transformed into one - the Holy Cross. There is a crucifix famous for its graces - an unusual sculpture that, according to tradition, in the 12th century was fished out from the Vistula River. From the time the monastery was founded, the Cistercians have been its hosts to this day. They came to Mogiła in 1222 from the monastery in Lubiąż in Lower Silesia. They were brought there by the Bishop of Krakow, Iwon Odrowąż. In the monastery, visitors can see the basilica, renovated cloisters with picturesque frescoes, chapter house, chapels of Lord Jesus Mogilski and chapels of the abbey.
