Information

The collegiate basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Miechów is a three-nave, three-span Gothic basilica from the 14th / 15th century with Romanesque fragments from the first thirty years of the 13th century, rebuilt in the late Baroque style in the second half of the 18th century. It is the seat of the Miechów Collegiate Chapter. In Basilica, there is the oldest replica of the Holy Sepulcher in the world, and the chapel above the tomb is older than the one that can be seen in Jerusalem today. It was built in the 16th century, and its architects modeled the appearance of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem from the Middle Ages. Interestingly, these are the only two sanctuaries dedicated to the Holy Sepulcher in the world. Inside the temple, there are as many as 12 altars made by Wojciech Rojowski. The main altar is a combination of the Rococo and Classicist styles, and the altar tabernacle is in the Rococo style. There are also a number of wonderful paintings depicting saints in the church. For centuries, pilgrims have been going to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Miechów to pray at the replica of the Jerusalem Sepulcher.
