Information

The history of fortifications in Świnoujście dates back to the 17th century. The author of the Prussian fortification complex defending an important port in Świnoujście was Johann Leopold Ludwig Brese. The fortress consisted of four forts, three of which have survived to our times. These are: Fort East called Gerhard Fort - located near the lighthouse, Fort West - Fort Angel and West Seaside Artillery Fort. The fourth fortness was Fort I in Warszów, which was destroyed in the 1970s. Gerhard's Fort was opened to the public in 2001. The entrance is guarded by a guard in an imperial-German uniform, equipped with period weapons. The sightseeing route includes the most interesting structures of the fort, including the underground route leading through its casemates. Visitors are witnessing a "sensational" demonstration of operating a 19th-century cannon. A twisted road called Ku Morzu Street leads through the forest to the Eastern Fort (Gerhard). Fort Angel and Fort West are located on the banks of the River Świna in Uznam.
