Information

The Old Town in Leszno is the most recognizable place in the city. It has the shape of an irregular quadrilateral. Each wall of the Market Square has a different length, the northern one is 82 meters, the eastern one is 102 meters, the southern one is 93 meters and the western one is 108 meters. Two streets protrude from each corner. The central part of the Market Square is the town hall. The town hall underwent several modernizations, and its present shape was given in 1709 by the outstanding Italian architect Pompeo Ferrari. A high tower with a clock is crowned with a tin cupola. There is also a carillon mounted on the clock tower - an instrument consisting of bells that plays melodies during full hours. The square is surrounded by beautiful tenement houses. Many of them hide the remains of older buildings in their walls, some of them have lost their former character as a result of numerous reconstructions. The promenade on Słowiańska Street, which leads from the square to the station, is a natural extension of the square. From the beginning of its existence and in modern times, the Old Market Square performs representative and commercial functions and is a marker of the city center.
