Meal on Christmas Eve the 24th of December is Christmas dinner that should start traditionally when the first star appears on the sky. All family gathers together then and first reads the gospel about the birth of Christ and then family members share special Christmas wafer and give each other best wishes. Then they sit by the table which has white table cloth and underneath it there is some straw. On the table there are always 12 dishes. Traditionally these are lent dishes, so no meat allowed. The main dishes are fish, especially carp and herring, and dumplings with cabbage and mushroom filling. The meal starts with a soup, which depending on a region is either red borscht with dumplings, boletus soup or carp soup. Next we will find various fish dishes, dumplings with various fillings, pancake rolls with mushrooms, kutia which is a dish of boiled wheat with poppy seeds and honey, noodles with poppy seed, peas with cabbage and compote of dried fruit. For dessert there are always gingerbread and poppy seed cakes and rolls. If you have opportunity to spend Christmas Eve in Poland it will definitely be unforgettable experience.
