Information

The castle in Międzyrzecze (Polish: Zamek w Międzyrzeczu) is a medieval defensive fortress, surrounded by a dike, raised in around 1350 by Casimir III the Great. It was built in the place of a former gord , in a strategic location, on a small hill in between two floodplains of the Obra and Paklica Rivers. The entire complex consists of a castle, museum and park. The museum presents, among others, the largest collection of coffin portraits in Poland with a total of 38 images, 18 inscription plates and 160 coats of arms. Apart from the coffin portraits, the Museum in Międzyrzecz has a collection of representative portrait paintings. The exhibition is supplemented by numismatic objects, carpentry, including examples of antique furniture, ceramics, period militaria, medallic art, books and documents (including numerous privileges for the city). In February 2012, a new exhibition was opened, showing the fate of people of various faiths and nationalities from the Middle Ages to 1947. The park surrounding the buildings dates back to the 19th century. The avenue of plane trees, which runs along the former outer rampart of the hillfort, is especially valuable here. The entire complex is complemented by the waters of Obra and Paklica and the castle moat.
