Information

The Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace is the second, after Wawel, early Renaissance building in Krakow. It was established at the beginning of the 16th century on the initiative of Erazm Ciołek, the canon of the cathedral chapter. A Renaissance gate with a cartouche with a crowned eagle with an interwoven letter S, which is the initial of King Sigismund the Old, leads to the palace. In 1996, the palace was handed over to the National Museum. The building was adapted for museum purposes, but partially retaining the palace character of the building. On the first floor there is a painting gallery of old Poland, where you can see art from the 13th to the middle of the 18th century. Among the valuable monuments, you can find here the famous Madonna of Krużlowa, as well as magnificent altars from the Dominican and Augustinian church from the mid-15th century. Above all, however, you can see the works of Wit Stwosz - Prayer in Gethsemane from the cemetery at St. Mary's Church and a small figure of Christ, initially hanging on the cross. The so-called death hall - dedicated to the Sarmatian love of lavish funerals. On the ground floor there is a separate church painting gallery -. It presents works of art from the 15th to the 19th century, mainly from the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but there are also Greek, Russian and Balkan icons. The collection also includes a lapidarium. The building also houses the Painting and Polychrome Sculpture Conservation Studio and museum warehouses.
