Information

Saints Philip and James Church is a Gothic, wooden church in the village of Sękowa from the 15th century. This is one of the most valuable wooden churches. Due to its history and specific appearance, it is often called the Pearl of the Low Beskids. In 2003, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List, along with other wooden churches in southern Małopolska. It is located on the wooden architecture route of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It was erected in 1520 from hand-hewn larch logs. The temple is built of larch wood and consists of five parts: chancel, nave, sacristy, tower and the so called in Polish “Saturdays”, i.e. low arcades surrounding the church, supported on pillars and covered with a one-pitched roof. The current equipment includes late Renaissance main altar from the beginning of the 17th century (reconstructed in 1948–49) with a painting of St. Nicholas, and on his sides St. Benedict and Antoni and the sculpture of the Savior of the World. Noteworthy is also a stone, late gothic baptismal font in the shape of a chalice from 1522. The church was awarded the Europa Nostra medal in 1994 for exemplary conservation work, and the Brother Albert award of the Minister of Culture and Art of the People's Republic of Poland.
