Information

St. Leonard Church in Lipnica Murowana is one of the oldest and most valuable wooden churches in Lesser Poland. According to tradition, it was built in 1141 on the site of a pagan temple, from which the so-called Światowid's pillar, supporting the Saint Leonard's altar at the back. It has been preserved almost unchanged to this day. The church is oriented, i.e. it has an altar facing east. It also has a carcass construction. The interior of the church is decorated with polychrome decorations from various periods, from the end of the 15th to the beginning of the 18th century. The chancel is decorated with scenes: Crucifixion, the Last Supper and the Last Judgment, the nave of scenes from the Passion and the Decalogue. Among the valuable equipment you can find: a rare processional feretor with a bas-relief of the Holy Trinity and a positive glass (still playing today). Originally, there were also three historic triptychs, but due to the protection against theft, the originals were placed in the museum in Tarnów. Their copies were placed in the Lipnica temple. The most famous cyclical event in Lipnica Murowana is the annual Easter palm competition, the highest of which are about 30 meters high. In 2003, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
