Information

The old synagogue in Biłgoraj was built in the first half of the 18th century, probably around 1728. The wooden building on a square plan, with a side of approx. 16.60 m and a height of 6.70 m, covered with shingles, was at that time the largest synagogue in the Zamość region. There was a vestibule in front of the prayer room, and there was a women's gallery on the first floor. The synagogue, together with the beth midrash and the bathhouse, was located in the synagogue square, near which the first Jewish cemetery was also located. The synagogue was completely destroyed in a fire in 1867. Thanks to the preserved documentation, it was reconstructed in 2009. The construction took less than 2 years. Currently, the synagogue covers over 370 square meters. The high, square main hall is covered with an octagonal vault supported by four pillars. The three-story roof is covered with shingles. The main hall is surrounded by one-story vestibules. In two corners of the building there are two-story annexes, called alcoves, which surround the galleries on the first floor. Galleries with balustrades are also inside the main hall. So far, the synagogue can only be viewed from the outside. In the future, there will be a museum of the Jews of Biłgoraj here.
