Information

The synagogue in Szczebrzeszyn is one of the oldest Jewish churches in Poland. The first synagogue in this place was built at the end of the 16th century, and this is confirmed by historical documents from 1584. However, it was burnt during the Khmelnytsky massacre in 1648-49. In 1659 it was thoroughly renovated. The synagogue was seriously damaged at the beginning of World War II, when its roof burned down and the vault collapsed. The building fell into disrepair until 1958, when renovation works began, which lasted until 1965. Then, it was designated as the Municipal and Communal Cultural Center, which is located there to this day. In addition, there is a Tourist Information point here, open all week during the season. In the near future, the synagogue will be handed over to the Jewish community in Warsaw. From the original building, only the central part of the building's body, formerly housing the men's room, has survived to this day. The building is covered with a high, mansard roof. The main prayer room is adjoined from the north and south by one-story women's galleries, and to the west by a two-story annex, formerly housing a male vestibule, a meeting room on the ground floor and an additional women's gallery on the first floor.
