Information

Tarnów is a beautiful, historic city in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, located 80 km east of Krakow. The city is called the Pearl of the Renaissance. While walking along the streets of Tarnów, you can admire the Renaissance tenement houses located in the heart of the market square, the Mikołajowski House built in the 16th century, the Florentine House or the centrally located Town Hall with a 30-meter tower and the oldest hand-wound clock in Poland. It is also impossible not to notice elements of Jewish culture, such as a bimah, a cemetery and a mikveh with the monument of the First Transport to KL Auschwitz (June 14, 1940). There is also a monumental railway station from 1910 in Tarnów, renovated in 2007-2010, which was bombed in 1939. Tarnów is famous for its monumental, the highest tombstones of the Tarnowski and Ostrogski families in Europe in the Cathedral Basilica. The ruins of the Tarnowski family castle dominate the town. The most outstanding Italian architects and sculptors such as Bartolomeo Berecci, Jan Maria Padovano and Santi Gucci created their works in Tarnów. There are also some important places of worship here. One of them is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows (Cathedral Basilica), which houses a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows made in wood in the 17th century, considered miraculous, as well as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. In addition, near Tarnów you can admire unique monuments of sacred art, such as a wooden church in Zawada, a wooden church in Skrzyszów or a sanctuary in Odporyszów. When visiting Tarnów, it is also worth visiting Zalipie, a charming village with the Zagroda Felicja Curyłowej museum. The oldest folk art competition in Poland, "The Painted Cottage", is organized in this town by the District Museum in Tarnów and the House of Painters in Zalipie. House of Painters is a center of creative work whose mission is to spread knowledge about the art of the region.
