Information

The Tenczyn Castle is located in the village of Rudno in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, 24 km west of Krakow, 5 km from Krzeszowice. The ruins of the castle stand on the former volcanic cone, which is the highest hill of Garb Tenczyński (Zamkowa Mountain 411 m above sea level). The first (wooden) castle was built around 1319 by the castellan of Kraków Nawój of Morawica. He also built the largest tower in the castle, known to this day as the "Nawojowa Tower". The creator of the brick castle was the son of Nawoj, Jędrzej, voivode of Kraków and Sandomierz. He erected a further fragment of the castle on the highest, north-east parts of the hill. In 1768, the castle burned down from a lightning strike and was finally abandoned by the inhabitants. Today, the Tenczyn Castle is under the care of the Krzeszowice commune. Since July 2016, the castle is open to visitors during the tourist season. The sightseeing route leads through the entrance bastion (barbican), the defensive corridor, the foregate, the Nawojowa tower, the courtyard of the upper castle and the defensive wall of the upper castle. The tour also includes the entrance to the Barbican and the Nawojowa Tower, from where there is a beautiful view of the rest of the castle and the entire surroundings. On clear days you can even see the Tatra Mountains. The route of the castle is shown by guides who interestingly tell about the rich history of Tenczyn and its reconstruction. In summer, the castle has a souvenir stall, a small gastronomy and many events accompanying the visit.
