Information

The Kurpiowski open-air museum is one of the most attractive monuments of the Łomża poviat. It was opened on June 19, 1927, by Adam Chętnik and his wife Zofia née Klukowski, as the Kurpie Museum. It belongs to the two oldest museums of folk architecture in Poland. The open-air museum presents the old history of the Kurpie people, and in particular how they used to live and work. The open-air museum in Nowogród is basically an ethnographic park, which covers an area of approx. 3.5 ha. Currently, there are 23 wooden residential and farm buildings and several dozen other objects (gates, chapels, wells, barns), as well as exhibits of folk art and natural specimens. Most of the buildings can also be visited from the inside. All buildings are of log construction, dating from the end of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century, from the area of the Kurpiowska Green Forest. It is an area with a specific, traditional folk culture with characteristic Kurpie clothing, sculptures, ornaments and wooden structures. There is an inn on site, where regional specialties are served. In the summer, the open-air museum hosts folklore events presenting the rich culture of the Kurpie region. The Kurpiowski open-air museum is situated on the high escarpment on the Narew River, in front of the mouth of Pisa to Narew. From the Ziemowita Hill, hiding the remains of a medieval castle, there is a magnificent panorama of the Kurpie Green Forest.
