Information

The Maciej shaft in Zabrze is a complex of facilities and equipment of the former Concordia mine. The beginnings of coal mining in this place date back to the mid-nineteenth century, when the exploitation of the deposit began. The shaft, hollowed to a depth of almost 200 meters, served mainly as a ventilation and drainage shaft. The present shaft development was built in the 1920s. After World War II, this facility was part of subsequent mines, incl. "Ludwik", "Rokitnica" and "Pstrowski". Coal deposits were exhausted in 1992 and then a decision was made to liquidate the entire area of the Maciej Shaft. Ultimately, however, the shaft was transformed into a deep water intake. The complex of buildings has been entered in the register of monuments, restored and adapted for tourist purposes. The biggest attraction of the "Maciej" shaft is the complex of former buildings, with a steel hoisting tower, at the top of which there is a vantage point. In the engine room, on the other hand, there is an electric, two-drum hoisting machine, and much more can be found throughout the facility. In 2005, the "Maciej" Shaft was included on the Industrial Monuments Route, combining history with modernity with a museum exhibition. Silesian customs and traditions are enriched by the bistro operating on the premises and a restaurant serving dishes typical of this region.
