Information

The Piast Castle in Racibórz is the former seat of the Upper Silesian rulers. The brick castle in Racibórz began to be erected in the first half of the 13th century. The rulers of the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz resided here. Around 1290, the Gothic chapel of St. Thomas Becket of Canterbury, English Martyr, was built. This chapel is called the pearl of Upper Silesian Gothic, and the circumstances of its creation (related to the conflict between the Wrocław bishop Tomasz and Prince Henry IV Probus) are described by Jan Długosz. The architecture of the castle temple is reminiscent of the famous Paris Sainte Chapelle. Since the 90s of the last century, the castle has been gradually renovated. In 2012, it was rebuilt and made available to the public. In June 2016, the renovated castle chapel was consecrated and put into use. A number of permanent and temporary exhibitions are organized in the castle throughout the year. The following events are very popular: Castle Night with Ghosts, Racibórz Days of Science and Technology, International Artistic Meetings Silesia - Land of Many Cultures, Castle Fair of flowers, organic food and handicrafts.
