Information

The castle in Siewierz are the ruins of the stronghold of Krakow bishops, located in the central part of the city of Siewierz, on the route from Katowice to Warsaw, on the western edge of the Kraków Częstochowa Upland. The origins of the castle date back to the second half of the 13th century, when, in connection with the location of the city, the local castellans erected a wooden and earth defensive seat. In its place, at the beginning of the 14th century, the dukes of Bytom built a gothic, brick castle. It was one of the main seats of the Dukes of Bytom, then of Cieszyn, and for a short period of time the seat of the Dukes of Świdnica and Jawor. Currently, the castle is the so-called a permanent ruin with the complete perimeter of the stone walls, the gate tower and the reconstructed barbican. Intensive renovation and conservation works have been carried out in recent years. Was established, among others viewing platform with stairs in the gate tower of the castle. A working wooden drawbridge with a footbridge was reconstructed (as the second in Poland). In addition: the courtyard was paved to protect its original fragments, other parts of the walls were rebuilt and secured, the slab over the castle's basement was rebuilt to be used as a stage, and the basement rooms were restored, in which the exhibition of archaeological discoveries was made. The castle has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region.
